The neurobiology group.

The aim of research in neurobiology is to gain insight in the correspondence between animal (and human) behavior and the function of the nervous system. This project is obviously formidable given the complexity of the nervous system and research can be undertaken on many different levels and with a variety of methods. The neurobiology group at SDU investigates hearing and sound communication in animals ranging from insects to whales. The methods used range from laser vibrometry measurements of the small-scale vibrations of the sensory organs to neurophysiology and studies of animal behavior and psychophysics.

The neurobiology group participates in the Center for Sound Communication (funded by the Danish National Research Foundation). Topics of research include:

  • Biophysics of hearing
  • Directional hearing in insects studied with laser vibrometry
  • How honeybees perceive their communication dances
  • Neuroethology of vibration sensitivity in anurans
  • Directional hearing in anurans
  • Communication and hearing in birds with special reference to the degradation of acoustic information by the environment
  • Insect hearing and behavior
  • Bat-insect interactions
  • Psychophysical investigations of bat echolocation
  • Field studies of bat and whale biosonar.
